Living The Dash - Part I
What if you knew you only had one month to live? Whether you are 80 or 18, your age is not the issue, it is the amount of time you have and how you will live out that time on this earth. Life passes quickly before us and we are never guaranteed tomorrow.
Dates bracket our life. Mine happen to be 4/17/1964 - ??? I am forty-six years old and am not certain how many days God has planned for me here. My sister's dates were 10/28/1965 - 11/9/1992. She was only twenty-seven. The dash in between these dates represents the way we live our life.
How will we live our 'dash'?
An eternal God calls us to acquire an eternal perspective. The inheritance of a son from God the Father is without measure. Will we live out our days for worldly treasures or for everlasting riches?
"So teach us to number our days, That we may present to You a heart of wisdom." Psalm 90:12, written by Moses when he was over 100 years old.
The choice is whether we will serve God or not.
Do we love Him with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength, as He has set for us as His greatest commandment?
Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' ~ Matthew 22:36-40
If we do love Jesus in this way, we can't help to have a heart of compassion for others. Our hearts will burn like fire to bring the peace and comfort we've received to another! How we use our God-given gifts and passions determines where our heart treasure really lies. Will we use them to serve God? His greatest commission is to GO; to walk through the doors of opportunity He places before us. (Matthew 28:16-20)
"No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon" (Matthew 6:19-24). (Mammon: earthly riches and property that we may lay up as security for our future by 'entrusting' it to another)
We can do beautiful things for Jesus even when walking through our own trials and suffering. In our weakness God can do mighty things! Not only that, but as we step out, take our focus off of our own suffering and reach out to help another, our healing is taking place. God uses the compassion and love we share with others to heal our own heart!
Pray for direction and purpose for your life. God presents the doors of opportunity, whether to love the lost on the streets of our own neighborhoods or across the oceans. And Love comes in so many forms. The most powerful of gifts is prayer and can be done without leaving your front yard. Gathering in fellowship with a few friends and committing to prayer for others is a beautiful way to serve God.
...and other doors begin to open
